Why do I need to control my snoring?

Snoring occurs when the soft tissues at the back of the mouth relax during sleep. Beyond the disruption it causes for you and your family, snoring can indicate medical complications, and lead to high blood pressure and heart problems in the long term.

Snoring can also be a precursor to obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), where the airway becomes blocked and causes the snorer to temporarily stop breathing. OSA can go undiagnosed for many years, but can be life-threatening. Anti-snoring devices can help.

How do anti-snoring devices work?

  • Small and discreet anti-snoring devices position your tongue and lower jaw more forward, keeping your airway open. This helps you breathe more naturally while you are sleeping, reducing snoring and sleep apnoea.
  • We use the Somnowell appliance, which is custom-made to your individual specifications. It is gentle and comfortable, making it easily able to be worn overnight as you sleep. You can even talk, drink and take medication with it in position.
  • If you suffer from snoring, sleep apnoea, TMJ (jaw joint) problems or even tooth grinding, the Somnowell device could be just what you’ve been looking for. Enjoy a peaceful sleep and wake up feeling refreshed!

Frequently asked questions

Sleep apnoea occurs when the airway becomes completely blocked for ten seconds or more during sleep. This condition can be life-threatening and is often linked to reduced muscle tone or an increase in weight. Many sufferers are unaware they have the disorder for years. If you suspect you have OSA, we can help arrange a formal medical diagnosis with a sleep specialist.
