Why is dentistry for children important?
At SmileWorks, we understand that your child’s dental health is a high priority for you, and we’re here to make it easy! Our paediatric dental care focuses on prevention and education, helping to set your child on the right track for a lifetime of excellent oral health and happy smiles.
Our highly qualified therapists are on hand to carry out our children’s examinations and will closely follow the growth and development of your child’s teeth. They can care for milk teeth right through to emerging permanent teeth, orthodontic advice, and beyond. Every visit and treatment is tailored to your child’s needs, so they and you feel safe, informed, and in control.
First visit – Start bringing your child with you to your dental appointments from an early age, and certainly once their first teeth appear. Their initial visits are mainly to get them used to the sights and sounds of our practice. We also carry out a quick check to make sure everything is developing as it should.
2
Regular check-ups – During their routine visits, we check your child is feeling at ease, assess their teeth and gums and monitor their jaw development. If needed, we can also use preventive treatments to help boost their dental health and prevent any decay.
3
Education & advice – We take the time to talk to your child about their teeth, diet and lifestyle, helping them with brushing techniques and personalised advice. We make oral hygiene fun and engaging, empowering your child to take pride in their healthy smile.
4
Orthodontic assessment – As your child grows, we keep a close eye on their teeth alignment and bite. If needed, we can discuss the appropriate timing for orthodontic assessments and treatment with braces or aligners.

We recommend that you take your child to their first dental visit as soon as their first teeth appear, or by their first birthday. Early visits help to familiarise them with the dental environment, and show them that dental appointments are nothing to be worried about. They also allow us to monitor jaw development and oral health from the very beginning.
A paediatric dentist covers everything from routine check-ups and preventive treatments such as fissure sealants to early hygiene care and tailored advice on brushing techniques. We can also carry out early orthodontic assessments if needed.
We suggest supervising your child’s brushing until they are at least seven years old. Using a fluoride toothpaste and making brushing a part of a fun morning and evening routine will help set them up for success!
Our team is highly experienced in supporting nervous younger patients. We use gentle language, explain our tools in a fun way, and never rush. You can also help by speaking positively about the dentist at home before your visit.
*Ongoing examinations for under-17s are free with a parent who also attends the practice for regular check-ups. Treatment and X-rays are chargeable as normal.
