What are the benefits of fissure sealants?

Fissure sealants are a quick and non-invasive way to safeguard your oral health. They are often given to children as their permanent teeth emerge, at around six or seven years old, but can be used for adults too.

The fissure sealant process is entirely pain-free, with no need for anaesthetic or drilling. Once they are in place, the fissure sealants are virtually invisible, durable and provide effective protection against tooth decay.

Fissure Sealants

What does the treatment involve?

  • We begin by polishing the tooth, removing plaque and food debris from the fissure surfaces.
  • We then etch the surface of the tooth with a special solution to prepare it. We rinse the solution and dry your tooth before carefully applying the sealant.
  • We use a curing light to harden the sealant, allowing it to bond quickly with the surface of your tooth, forming a tough coating.

Frequently asked questions

To ensure sealants offer the best protection, it is important they are used in conjunction with a comprehensive dental care routine that includes effective brushing, flossing and a healthy diet. However, treated teeth will have smoother surfaces, so they will be much easier to keep clean.
